A visit to the dentist is a stressful event for many people, stress is often aggravated by the lack of knowledge what to do and what to avoid before the appointment at the dental clinic.
We have prepared for you a few recommendations for a more comfortable visit to the specialist. Also, your attending doctor will appreciate such preparation!
Recommendation No.1. Regular care for your dental health
Adequate and regular care for teeth is a cornerstone of teeth and gum health. General cleaning only once before the visit at the dentist can’t bring the desired result. In addition to daily teeth brushing in the morning and evening using medicinal – prophylactic toothpaste and mouthwash – it is important to use a toothbrush after each meal.
You also must remember of additional procedures – flossing and teeth irrigators, which help to eliminate the food particles from between teeth and prevent the build-up of plaque on enamel. These procedures help to maintain health of oral cavity and prevent disease of teeth and gums.
Recommendation No.2. Do not consume “sticky” food before a visit to the dentist
Many of the foods (sweets, carbohydrate rich foods) form plaque on the enamel, which interferes with the examination and diagnostics of the dental disease. Before appointment with the doctor, it is not recommended to consume “sticky” food such as toffee, chocolate, cheese, or sausages.
Prefer light meals with vegetables and fruit. Brush your teeth after this meal and rinse your oral cavity. Your dentist will be grateful for such preparation before the visit.
Recommendation No.3. Avoid staining drinks and do not smoke
Tea, coffee, red wine, soda, cigarettes are enemies of enamel, because they form dark and yellowish tartar on your teeth. Therefore, it is advised to limit consumption of such substances or to use whitening mouthwash which prevents the staining.
However, a cup of tea or coffee before the visit is totally acceptable, particularly if you arrived early and must wait to get to the doctor. In any case, the doctor will offer you to rinse your mouth with special liquids before the examination.
Recommendation No.4. If it is possible, try to avoid foods with strong aromas
Before the appointment at the dentist it is advised to avoid food which contain onions, garlic, meet, and cheese. Also, avoid alcohol, including beer. These products contain substances with specific aromas, which persist for a while even after brushing and rinsing of the oral cavity.
Recommendation No.5. If you don’t feel well, reschedule your appointment.
Infectious and viral diseases (acute respiratory disease, tonsillitis, influenza, herpes, respiratory infections, rhinitis) are problematic while dental treatment is performed, because such diseases increase the risk of inflammation and complications. If your problem does not call for emergency treatment (acute pain, decayed tooth), reschedule the appointment until you have recovered.
And, of course, remember that punctuality is the politeness of kings. Therefore, if you cannot make it to the scheduled appointment because of unpredicted circumstances, please give us a call and we’ll reschedule your appointment.
